Vampire Diaries costars Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder met while filming The Vampire Diaries and dated while Nina was still on the show, 2010-2013.
The perfect vampire celebrity couple won multiple awards for their on-screen chemistry, and many fans proclaim 'Nian' as their OTP (one true pairing). Ironically they also won the 2014 ship of the year award for their on screen relationship the year after they had broken up in real life.
Their relationship ended in 2013 but filming for the Vampire Diaries continues, with another season scheduled to air, number 7, (without Nina Dobrev, the main character, who chose to leave after her 6 year contract ran out this Spring of 2015).
Nina and Ian both claim to still be friends after their breakup, and Nina also wishes Ian 'Nothing but happiness' in her recent interview with E!

I am impressed by Nina's gracious attitude, especially since Ian just married one of Nina's friends, Nikki Reed.
Ian, however, recently 'unfollowed' Nina on Twitter, making a very public statement that he no longer wants to be connected to her in that way. The reason 'unfollowing' someone is more of a public statement than a private one is that you can simply 'hide' someone's tweets from your feed if you would rather not see them anymore but still be 'following' their feed publicly.
However, maybe Ian is just not that technologically advanced, and did not wish to make a statement by 'unfollowing' Dobrev..?
Dobrev is rumored to be dating Austin Stowell (although who knows if that is true with all of the rumored boyfriends Nina has supposedly 'had'), and some speculate that is the reason Somerhalder unfollowed her on Twitter.
However I think there is a simpler reason Ian unfollowed Nina. Looking at her Twitter feed of happy, carefree, laughing pictures, and young, funny quotes, it is easy to see she is having fun and at a different point in her life than both Ian and Nikki.
Ian and Nikki don't really post pictures while Nina's feed is full of her pics in beautiful dresses, laughing with friends, and making jokes on Twitter. For example:

Ian and Nina both have over 5 million twitter followers (probably mostly due to the popularity of the Vampire Diaries), but use their social influence in different ways. Ian seems to be concerned with the environment and political issues such as the recent Chinese dog controversy, and urges his followers to do the same.
Nikki has fewer than 1 million twitter followers and similar to Ian, she posts serious quotes about issues she deems important and no pictures of herself as well as no cute or funny quotes or anything personal about her life. For example:

Why would Ian want to follow his ex-girlfriend on Twitter when it would mean he would have to see pictures of her laughing with friends and making jokes when he is clearly more concerned with using his celebrity status to save the world and be more serious with his new wife Nikki.
In my opinion, you can use Twitter for whatever you want, be it a serious issue, your new hairdo, or a hilarious/inspirational quote. Nina Dobrev kills the inspirational quote game as well, btw, so Ian will be missing out on those in the future.
However, I think it was as simple as Ian and Nina being at different points in their lives, and Ian not being aware you can hide tweets without publicly unfollowing someone that caused him to unfollow his ex.
That's my analysis of the situation..What do you think?
